The career: Railroad Welder

Railroad Welders connect rail joints by welding, rebuild various track components and perform other maintenance of way welding tasks, meeting specific needs of individual railroad employers.

What else do I need to know about being a track welder?

Track welding is a unique skill providing satisfaction when each task is completed in a safe and proper manner. Track welders work in a team environment where each person is responsible for their own safety and the safety of those working with them. Track welders are responsible for the welding repair of rail and track components, including but not limited to rails, frogs and switch points. They are also responsible for repairs to these components per the Federal Railroad Administration track safety standards to ensure the safe and efficient movement of trains.

  • Obtaining a CDL with HAZMAT endorsement as required

What will I learn at NARS?

You take five courses in our classrooms, laboratories and field locations during the eight-week program on the campus of Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, KS, a suburb of Kansas City. Upon completion you will posses the skills required for a Welder position, including all types of electric and Thermite welding.

What are the results at the end of the program?

Successful completion of the Railroad Welder Training Program qualifies you for entry-level locomotive mechanic positions with most railroads. You will receive a certificate of completion and you will also have 15 hours of college credit, giving you a great start on an Applied Associate of Science (AAS) degree.

You will also be a top candidate for employment in the railroad industry.
